CMU School of Design // Intersecta // May 2012

"Intersecta" was a concept for an interactive learning space created for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. It encourages visitors to explore the crucial role insects play in our lives and inspires them to further explore the museum's section of entomology. I worked with Tommy Browne, Rowan Harty, and Luci Laffitte to design the information and interactions involved, as well as the space itself. This concept video provides an overview of the space and how it might be used.

This project morphed into BugWorks, an experimental exhibit about the world of insects and how they function, at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. BugWorks is now open to the public.

CMU School of Design // Print Production // February 2010
During a lesson about printing constraints and UPS requirements, I created a postcard that could be used by the School of Design during their admissions process, to be sent to prospective students.

The postcard features one of several self-portraits by Vivian Wang, a recent grad, and a talented photographer.

CMU School of Design // Senior Show Exhibit Design // April 2011
I volunteered, along with classmate, Tommy Browne, to develop a concept, produce, light, coordinate, cater, set up, and tear down the 2011 Fall Senior Design Show.

After we calculated that we'd have to organize 45 students, and over 150 pieces of work from six separate classes, we realized how big of a challenge this was going to be.

We were fortunate enough to have a massive, raw, empty space, which ended up being a great influence on the way we decided to display the work in the space. Together, we created a hanging system with cables, wooden shims, binder clips, and washers — all of which added to the industrial, yet simple aesthetic that was present throughout the space. The thin cable and simplicity of the hanging system allowed for the space to feel more open, as you could see through from one space to the next. We also asked students to construct their own cardboard tables in a specific way that would be clean, easy, recyclable, and consistent across the board.

<img src="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/seniorshow_floorplan.jpg" width="670" height="673" width_o="758" height_o="762" src_o="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/seniorshow_floorplan_o.jpg" data-mid="15876454" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/hanging1.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="670" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/hanging1_o.jpg" data-mid="15753627" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/cardboard3.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="670" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/cardboard3_o.jpg" data-mid="15753635" border="0" align="left"/>
While Tommy focused on the branding, visual identity, and image system for the exhibit's signage and promotional materials, I decided to focus on the spatial arrangement and how to create a cohesive exhibit with such a wide variety of artifacts being displayed.

<img src="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/nametag_2_1000.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="670" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/nametag_2_1000_o.jpg" data-mid="15753834" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/wonderposter.jpg" width="670" height="933" width_o="670" height_o="933" src_o="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/wonderposter_o.jpg" data-mid="15753972" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/furnitureposter.jpg" width="670" height="932" width_o="670" height_o="932" src_o="http://payload39.cargocollective.com/1/5/172015/3086552/furnitureposter_o.jpg" data-mid="15753975" border="0" align="left"/>
This self-directed work taught me a lot about budgeting my time and money, communicating effectively with peers and with people outside the project, and how to approach such large projects with a quickly-approaching deadline. This was one of the most difficult projects I have ever worked on, but also the most intense and exciting design experience that I've had so far.

Check it out! We've attracted some fans (kinda...)!

CMU School of Design // Senior Studio // October 2011

This was an assignment for the "Wonder Lab" portion of Senior Studio with Prof. Kristin Hughes and Gill Wildman at CMU, created using Illustrator.

In this fast-paced researching and strategizing "lab," I was asked to choose a design-related topic that interested me, and then to develop my own methods for researching that particular topic.

I've always been intrigued by the way that spaces are designed (or not designed) to improve our experiences within those spaces. After four years of working in a studio setting with fellow designers, I began thinking how people truly prefer to work, and if they would change their workspace if they had the opportunity to do so.

I conducted research with four different people, who each used their current workspaces for different activities, and who were all at different stages in their lives or careers. I provided each person with a white paper box, all kinds of writing utensils, tools, and materials, and then asked each person separately to design their ideal workspaces within the paper box (representation of a room), and walk me through their reasoning. They were allowed to cut and alter the shape of the room in any way, and they had the choice of deciding what the scale of the "room" would be (how many people/things could fit into that single white box).

After comparing the responses of the four people, I found strong similarities, but enough differences that they couldn't really be categorized as falling under the same "workspace persona." From that point on, I referred to them as the "dreamer," the "collaborator," the "entertainer," and the "hunter-gatherer," based on what needs they had as individuals.

The methods I used, and the research I found, could be used by designers, and by anyone who wants to change the workspace they currently use in order to better fit their working needs, and their individual personalities.

CMU School of Design // How People Work // December 2009

The goal of this assignment was to find a poorly designed product or communication design piece, and to redesign it based on research findings from user testing. I worked with Tommy Browne and Pete Winslow to revise the IRS Form 1040. This was the poster we created to show the changes we made, and to show the processes we used to get to our solution.

This class focused on the importance of design research and the understanding of complex systems, specifically in the context of information design and user-centered design. It was a challenge to work with information that was already (apparently) simplified as much as possible, but we found that simple changes in language and document layout made a huge difference.

CMU School of Design // Independent Study // September 2011 - present

This independent project sprouted from an early design proposal project, in which I discovered and exposed the need for a greater way-finding system for those who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices on campus.

However, after studying the topic further, I found that most of the way-finding issues (both online, and in print) affected everyone, including prospective students and families, first-year students, and visitors in general.

I worked closely with my advisor, Miso Kim, to see how we could redesign the campus map in a way that would simplify the content and aesthetic, while making it fit seamlessly into CMU's current website. Users can view the map in "layers," in order to hide the information they don't really need to see.

CMU School of Design // Senior Studio // December 2011

This was an assignment for the "Play Lab" portion of Senior Studio with Prof. Nick Durrant and Steve Stadelmeier at CMU, created using Illustrator and AfterEffects CS5.

In this fast-paced prototyping "lab," we were asked to invent something that could potentially become a part of the "internet of things," meaning that it would somehow be connected physically or digitally to another object or person in another place.

My partner, James Zulkie, and I created the foodiePRO prototype and video to show the possibilities of future technology, and how it could be used to help anyone at home or in a grocery store setting to begin to be a healthier shopper, and to maintain that healthy lifestyle over time, based on their specific dietary needs and preferences. The foodiePRO would ideally be connected to a larger online network where other people with similar dietary preferences could give input or suggestions as well, which would essentially connect people over one thing we all have in common: the need for food.

In this case, I was responsible specifically for creating the product's identity, and the presentation's visual system.
